Rob, Jackie & Kevin GLB, August 2003
GLB from a newby and textile perspective. We arrived about 5pm Sunday the 27th, we had exclusive transport from the airport if you can call it that, it was interesting. The taxi or bus or whatever you call it was past its best and the roads don't help but the driver using his mobile at the same time was not a good idea, we still survived. On arrival at the resort we were right behind some of our American cousins, they had arrived minutes before us and were checking in en masse, we tagged along. The room was as we expected, very similar to our holiday in Mexico last year, the bathroom needed an upgrade but it was functional and clean. We spent most of our 2 weeks further up the beach away from the noise and activities, this also meant Jackie could sunbathe topless without offending too many people. I have to say the resort facilities were wasted on us, the only all inclusive option we used was the glass bottomed boat, however, we wouldn't have used the other options anyway, included or not. It was very windy though this seemed to lessen as you moved inland, the sea was choppy for most the day not snorkeling or swimming weather so neither of us went in the sea and we did not use the pool either. What we look for in a holiday are privacy and individual attention from the staff, we got both in large quantities at GLB. The staff were terrific and could not do enough for us, even to the point of celebrating our anniversary twice a clerical error I think. They did think we were a bit strange though carrying a teddy bear (Kevin) around the resort and photographing him in different locations. The food was excellent and waiter service quick and efficient, I put on 7lbs. The Japanese restaurant was brilliant, best meal I had while I was there though the fillet steak at the French restaurant was a close second. The grounds are amazing and so well kept, constant maintenance in operation wherever you went. We did use the gym once but decided we were lazybones and this was not in the chill out book of holidays. We visited the school on our second to last day with Camille, met Mr. Blackwood and handed over the letters from Pinehurst infant school and took some pictures of Kevin at the school. Martha your pictures do not prepare you for the real thing, Jackie got quite tearful after the visit. Jamaica does remind me a lot of Belize, same run down buildings and half completed buildings, same standard of roads. Considering this was not our choice of resort, (we got bumped from Sandals) Jackie and I had a very relaxing and pampered holiday, we will return but not next year, I will wait until they have upgraded the bathrooms PS I liked Denton the pool barman's theory of evolution, He reckoned that only the fittest survive and the strong feed off the weak, so he reasoned, when you drink only the weak brain cells die, so getting "messed up" as he called it, was actually making you more intelligent, as the strongest brain cells were the ones that survived. He was very entertaining J Link to our Vacation Photos: Rob, Jackie and Kevin at GLB Rob Hunt A Legend in his own lifetime |
