GLB April 2003

Lane and Angie

April 2003 – Actually wrote this write after we got back, but forgot to post it. Even then some of the memories were blurry. For instance, I know we ate at La Pasta multiple times, but don’t remember when…

We got up at 4:30 for our 8:00 flight out of Atlanta. After a layover in Miami, we landed in steamy Jamaica. What a chaotic airport. At least it didn’t take us too long to get through to the SuperClubs desk. Lane bought us some drinks for the roadtrip to Ocho Rios. That was the best idea we’d had that day.

Our driver was a blast, giving us a grand tour of the countryside. Goats & cows everywhere. Stopped for the typical beer break. We dropped 1 couple off at Starfish and the rest of the busload went to Braco. Lane got asked 2 or 3 times to buy weed before we even got to the resort. Guess they never ask the females.

We arrrived about 2:30 or so and got checked right in. Cool towels and drinks as soon as we got seated. Besides them having the Mr and Mrs switched around on our paperwork, everything was cool. Block 10, 3rd floor, gardenview (but if you looked real hard we had an oceanview). We learned after we got home that we were supposed to have a flower arrangement in our room from my parents – it never appeared.

We immediately went to Nanny’s Jerk Pit for some chicken. I think we wondered around a little bit, but the place was pretty dead at that time of day. We went back to our room and ended up going to bed early that night.

Tuesday:

Got up at 7:30, ate at the buffet, hit the beach. Orientation with Joyleen. Lunch at the clubhouse, met a couple that had just got married. Afternoon rain, ended up playing drinking games in the piano bar with 14 other people. Had a blast. Everyone kept their number and ‘shit’ name (from 2 different drinking games) and was recognized by them the whole week. Had a couples massage at 5 pm – we had to do it inside since the outside was all muddy. The room was not meant for 2 massage tables! I wasn’t impressed with the massage, but Lane liked his.

Met quite a few of the drinking game people at toga night later. The disco, and toga night, was a bust. Maybe 20 people in the disco, so we headed to the clubhouse for drinks and a nekkid soak in the (textile) too-hot hottub. I went (nekkid) to get a pitcher of drinks from the bar and one guy took a picture of me! What an ass. Late night – got to bed around 3 or 4 am after a swim in the ocean and a (short) frantic search for room keys in the sand.

Wednesday:

Got up at 7:30 for room service (we didn’t think we’d be out that late when we ordered it). Leisurely ate breakfast on the porch, hit the nekkid beach. Vinnie and Kristen joined us later in the day. Buffet lunch at Victorias Market. Beach party (inside) for dinner. The house band is great! The entertainment was a blast – except I wasn’t big on the ‘everyone has to dance around the room’ theory. The steel drum guy was incredible. Went to bed at a more reasonable time.

The beach on the nekkid side is much nicer – less rocks in the sand. Plus the fresh fruit lady is there as well as the water mister lady. Found out I loved fresh coconut!

Thursday:

Breakfast buffet, I think we actually slept in until about 10 or so. The buffet had been picked over bigtime. Hit the nekkid beach again and the nekkid pool bar. Took part in the Au Naturel luncheon. Experienced the lamp chops for the first time! Boy do I ever wish I had them earlier – they would have been a daily staple to my diet. We met a few couples at the pool bar, but mostly they treated us like their kids. We felt young.

Drink mixology in the afternoon on the textile side with Hioka (I-oka) and Denton. It was all about the rum. Rum shots with Hioka’s concoctions in between. We don’t think that’s how Drink Mixology is normally done, but it was great! Hioka even did a 5 star shot (5 top shelf liquors in one shot – 5 oz total). That was probably one of the most memorable things we did.

Japanese for dinner. Yummy! Ended up on the textile side playing drinking games after dinner. Fruity shots and Tequila Sunrises by the textile pool. Then off to get dressed for PJ night. Better turn out for PJ night in the disco. Still not packed but busy at least. Ended up at the textile clubhouse for a drink, then over to the nekkid hottub (totally opposite sides of the resort). Nothing was happening on the nekkid side, it looked desserted. Another late night.

Friday:

Slept in and had a picked over buffet for breakfast. Got snorkel gear from water sports shack and snorkeled on the nekkid side. Not too much to see, but we did see some cool fish.

Street party night, got a table with Mike and Trease. Great food selection. I could have lived at the salad table! Lane loved the shrimp and we both loved the potatoes. The bartender knew Lane and Mike by their second drink. Pretty impressive. Entertainment could use some work. Early night for us.

Saturday:

Tried to get back into the Japanese restaurant, but it was a no go. Went on the snorkel boat ride. It was great. Wish we would have done it sooner, then we would have gone out again. We got some good pictures with our underwater camera.

Lane won another bottle of Rum at bingo. Played dominoes with Hioka. Spent way too much time at the pool bar with Denton. Had tons of his specialty – pink flamingo. Stumbled home about 5 or 6 pm. Ordered room service – Lane got more lamb chops (I would have if I had seen them). Had a rough night – being overserved and all. Didn’t really leave the room after that.

Sunday:

We checked out at 10 am. Drive to the airport was uneventful, not nearly as much fun as the initial ride. Packed bus on Easter Sunday. Flights sucked. Got into Minneapolis about 10 pm.

What we wish we would have done:

More daytime activities – snorkeling, etc

Eaten more lamb chops (but I have a recipe to try at home now)

Made more reservations for the restaurants

Body painting (we kept missing it)

More drink mixology

Glad we did:

Bring our own insulated 32 oz mugs (great for ice water in the morning)

Tips:

Grab towels when you see them

There were plenty of floats/rafts available for anyone who wanted them, don’t bring your own

Disappointed with:

The lack of shade around the Au Naturel pool
